La Preservation Hall Jazz Band, un gruppo che ha più di cinquanta anni di attività alle spalle, è sinonimo, oltre che di grande musica, della città di New Orleans. Un gruppo che suona old time jazz ma anche blues, una band che ha le radici inculcate in ogni nota, ritorna tra noi con il primo disco di musica originale, da molti anni a questa parte. E la produzione è di Jim James, leader dei My Morning Jacket, che ha suonato spesso con la PHJB negli anni scorsi. Storica band che rappresenta la grande tradizione musicale di New Orleans. Esistono da moltissimo tempo ed hanno cambiato i musicisti diverse volte. Ma lo spunto originario della band rimane sempre quello di preservare le tradizioni musicali della Crescent City. In questo nuovo album, i due leaders Ben Jaffe ( che è anche il produttore, assieme a Dave Sitek) e Charlie Gabriel, dopo un viaggio a Cuba, hanno deciso di unire le due culture e creare un suono che è molto influenzato dalla musica cubana, ma che mantiene comunque profonde radici in quello di New Orleans. Un cocktail intrigante che mischia antico e moderno.

This recording of South Indian classical music features three of India's most exciting performers, each of whom was a member of the group Shakti. Raga Aberi is Shankar's original composition and is played as one continuous piece in a tala of 4 and 3/4 beats (4 kala Pallavi).

The Billboard p. 42: "Oscar Pettiford heads a jazz sextet which has begun a tour of Army camps fot the USO. The unit is known as the "Swingin' Jamboree" and along with Pettiford includes trumpeter Howard McGhee, tramist Jay Johnson, drummer Charlie Rice, tenorist Budd Johnson and guitarist Clifton Best."
The USO unit was put together by Pettiford. It debuted at shows in New Jersey and at Pine Camp in northern New York state. They went overseas on Nov. 3 after playing a number of USO dates at camps across the United States. Then they went to Korea, Japan, and Southern Pacific islands. However, this group encountered internal problems that resulted in Pettiford leaving the tour early to return to the United States. Cf. Ralph Gleason's article in Down Beat (February 22, 1952). - "It was cold like something else," Rice said of Korea. "We'd be playing for five minutes, and the guys' lips would freeze to the mouthpieces."
