nel 1958 adam strickland e` un laureando di cambridge, che viene mandato dal suo professore a scrivere la tesi su un celebre giardino rinascimentale di un`antica dimora vicino a firenze, villa docci. ad attenderlo, pero`, non ci sono solo le sfarzose feste in terrazza della padrona di casa e le conversazioni brillanti con le rampolle dell`aristocrazia locale, ma anche un complotto la cui ombra ttraversa i secoli e lega insieme due omicidi distanti quattrocento anni. su tutto e tutti domina l`antico giardino, che sembra esercitare, su chiunque vi entri, un fascino che sconfina nel sortilegio.
