Il geniale pianista bebop Bud Powell ha realizzato le sue registrazioni più durature come leader per la Blue Note ed è stato un catalizzatore per il passaggio dell'etichetta dall'hot jazz su cui era stata fondata alla musica moderna prodotta da Powell, Thelonious Monk, Fats Navarro e altri. Le sessioni del quintetto e del trio di Powell del 1949 e del 1951 furono pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1952 come LP da 10 pollici The Amazing Bud Powell, e successivamente ampliate come The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1 (BLP 1503) quando la Blue Note passò al LP da 12 pollici e lanciò la serie 1500 nel 1955. Il quintetto vedeva il pianista affiancato da artisti del calibro del trombettista Fats Navarro, del sassofonista tenore Sonny Rollins, del bassista Tommy Potter e del batterista Roy Haynes, che eseguivano brani originali di Powell come “Dance of the Infidels”, ‘Wail’ e “Bouncing with Bud”. Il trio vedeva il bassista Curly Russell e il batterista Max Roach affiancare Powell nel vivace classico “Un Poco Loco”, qui presentato in tre take in evoluzione, insieme alle intramontabili versioni di “Parisian Thoroughfare” di Powell e “A Night In Tunisia” di Dizzy Gillespie, oltre alla straordinaria performance al pianoforte solista di “It Could Happen To You”.
