Grande trombettista, spesso sottovalutato, Kenny Dorham ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella storia degli esordi della Blue Note, partecipando come turnista alle registrazioni bebop di Thelonious Monk e Art Blakey, alle sessioni fondamentali dell’hard bop con Horace Silver e in qualità di membro fondatore dei Jazz Messengers. Infatti, appena sei mesi dopo che i Jazz Messengers incisero le loro epocali registrazioni dal vivo omonime al Cafe Bohemia, Dorham portò il proprio sestetto nel leggendario jazz club newyorkese nel maggio 1956 per registrare la sua prima sessione dal vivo a proprio nome.
Il sestetto di Dorham per l'occasione era una formazione formidabile con J.R. Monterose al sassofono tenore, Kenny Burrell alla chitarra, Bobby Timmons al pianoforte, Sam Jones al basso e Arthur Edgehill alla batteria. Presentata per intero, la scaletta comprendeva brani originali di Dorham, Monk e Dizzy Gillespie, oltre a una selezione di standard del Great American Songbook.
