Sebbene i suoi strumenti principali fossero il sassofono tenore e il flauto, Yusef Lateef era noto per la sua innovativa fusione tra jazz e musica asiatica. Oltre all'oboe e al fagotto (entrambi strumenti insoliti nel jazz), suonava anche vari altri strumenti. Lateef iniziò a registrare come leader nel 1957 per la Savoy Records, un'associazione non esclusiva che continuò fino al 1959. I suoi primi album per la New Jazz, sussidiaria della Prestige, si sovrappongono alle sue registrazioni per la Savoy. Cry! - Tender è stato uno di questi primi album per la New Jazz, registrato durante questo periodo iniziale della carriera e l'unica sessione che abbia mai registrato con il trombettista Lonnie Hillyer.
