gennaio 1925. mentre il duce si assume alla camera la responsabilita` del delitto matteotti, su una sperduta isola italiana, sede di una colonia penale per delinquenti comuni e prigionieri politici, viene trovato il cadavere di una camicia nera. a indagare su questa morte, e su quelle che seguiranno, e` chiamato un giovane commissario senza illusioni, ne` fascista ne` antifascista, un piccolo malinconico eroe involontario. ha una moglie resa folle dalla tristezza, dalla solitudine e dagli influssi malefici che aleggiano sull`isola. che sembra intanto sprofondare in una sorta di incantesimo sempre piu` insondabile, tanto che forse, ormai, allontanarsi e` dawero impossibile...

ci sono frasi tenere, ma ci sono anche incomprensioni, tensioni, matrimoni finiti male, divorzi, annullamenti della sacra rota, amanti che hanno avuto un ruolo decisivo nella vita privata e anche nella vita pubblica degli uomini che hanno guidato l`italia nell`ultimo secolo. questo libro di bruno vespa e` assai diverso da tutti gli altri: non racconta i retroscena della politica (che pure non mancano), ma i retroscena dell`anima. con una serie di vicende finora mai rivelate, o dissepolte da un lungo oblio. quanti sanno che mussolini era forse bigamo? che francesco cossiga ha ottenuto, dopo sette anni di istruttoria, l`annullamento del suo matrimonio? veronica berlusconi parla dopo la famosa lettera alla "repubblica" in cui chiedeva "pubbliche scuse" al marito. daniela fini svela il suo stato d`animo dopo la recentissima separazione. azzurra caltagirone traccia un ritratto di pier ferdinando casini, appena sposato. linda d`alema rompe il silenzio solo per dirsi innamorata di massimo. ci sono, poi, i drammatici "amori comunisti", da gramsci a togliatti a longo, le garbate contestazioni politiche di letizia berlinguer, le soddisfazioni e le amarezze di adele natta, aureliana occhetto, anna fassino. la vita idilliaca di francesca de gasperi e i drammi della famiglia moro. un secolo di storia d`italia attraverso l`amore. un ritratto inedito del potere, scritto da bruno vespa in presa diretta.

il film western e` l`epica drammatizzazione della conquista del west e della nascita della nazione americana, ma e` anche molto di piu`: rappresenta la messa in scena dell`"homo americanus" come si e` venuto forgiando e come ora lo conosciamo; un teatro di passioni umane, un luogo psicologico e spirituale in cui ogni gesto ha un significato e ogni parola potrebbe essere l`ultima. imperniato sulle sensazioni fisiche, votato alla violenza come scelta morale, posseduto dal bisogno di dominare e imprigionato dal proprio codice eroico e ascetico, il western americano si e` assunto il compito di creare il mito della frontiera, dandogli una liricita` che lo ha portato al livello di altri grandi capitoli della storia dell`arte. questo libro e` un viaggio nel genere piu` "americano", piu` puro e sublime, attraverso l`analisi puntuale dei suoi molteplici archetipi e significati culturali e la messa a fuoco delle sue feconde contraddizioni: legge e anarchia, individuo e comunita`, citta` e deserto, violenza e democrazia, nomadismo e sedentarieta`.
