Atteso in modo quasi spasmodico, sia dai fans che dai media, il nuovo lavoro del rocker del New Jersey è sicuramente destinato a fare discutere. Ha un suono intenso e rarefatto che, sin dalla copertina, ci fa percepire che non siamo di fronte ad un disco di rock classico, bensì ad un album di ballate sfiorate dal suono della canzone d'autore. Infatti Western Stars è un lavoro sofisticato, anche orchestrato, arrangiato da Ron Aniello, produttore, e dai musicisti che aiutano Springsteen in questa nuova avventura ( David Sancious, Patti Scialfa, Jon Brion, Charlie Giordano, Soozie Tyrell ). Western Stars, che ha dei testi introspettivi e curati, è comunque un disco che si stacca da quanto Springsteen ha fatto in passato, ma ha una sua logica e si fa ascoltare. Indubbiamente, più lo si ascolta e più si capisce che Springsteen ha voluto fare una cosa diversa ed il giudizio finale può diventare sicuramente positivo. Siamo comunque lontani dallo Springsteen più classico. Edizione Usa.

Housed in a gatefold jacket with a glossy exterior. The jacket opens vertically to reveal the full Hieronymus Bosch painting "Hell", the third panel of "The Garden of Earthly Delights" c. 1490–1510.
The original album was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, London during January - March 1969 and it was remastered in 2000 at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Dopo avere annunciato il suo ritiro dalle scene, Paul Simon pubblica il suo quattordicesimo disco di studio In the Blue Light però non contiene canzoni nuove, bensì dei ripensamenti, a livello di suono e di arrangiamenti, di canzoni già registrate ma non molto note. Non abbiamo quindi i classici, ma una serie di brani abbastanza oscuri, anche secondari, riletti in modo personale, tra jazz e musica da camera, con largo spazio ad una strumentazione ricca che non fa altro che migliorare le canzoni stesse, renderle più ariose, anche più personali. E se buona parte del merito è di Paul Simon e del suo collaboratore di sempre Roy Halee, non si può disconoscere che la bellezza del disco deriva anche dai suoni, da Wynton Marsalis, Bill Frisell, Jack DeJohnette, Rob Moose, J. Camerieri, Bryce Dessner ( The National), Steve Gadd, John Patitucci e Joe Lovano.
