Tracks 14 through 17 are bonus tracks.
Originally issued on HIFI Recordings in the late '50s and now available on CD for the first time, HAWAIIAN SUNSET has been digitally remastered from the original three-track master tapes and features four bonus tracks culled from Lyman's extensive catalog, recently acquired by Rykodisc.
On his third album, HAWAIIAN SUNSET, released in 1959, Lyman explores his Hawaiian heritage while weaving in the cool-jazz elements epitomized by Miles Davis' BIRTH OF THE COOL album. Linking Pacific Rim exotica and American jazz, the album features an array of authentic Hawaiian instruments, including a pa'i, puili and uliuli. Actually a love song and a well-known rhythmic chant, "Hawaiian War Chant" utilizes these native instruments, while "Hilawe" features Lyman himself on slack-key guitar.
The HIFI/Rykodisc rerelease of HAWAIIAN SUNSET features liner notes by Tiki News co-editor Otto von Stroheim, who writes, "Sounds of the sea, trade wind breezes through palm trees and the rainbow coloring of flowers are expressed in songs...Here we have programmed listening pleasure as beautifully simple and relaxing as the islands at sunset." HAWAIIAN SUNSET contains four additional bonus tracks compiled from BAHIA and COLORFUL PERCUSSIONS (two other Lyman titles from the hifi archive), including a version of "Quiet Village," a cover of the cover that launched the exotica craze.
