Recorded November 1965 in New York City.
The back cover which lists the tracks and personnel is reproduced from the original 1966 LP issue, which differ from this CD reissue. On releases from 1975 onwards the original track 3 "Exhibition" with Bennie Maupin on tenor saxophone was replaced with "Mephistopheles" with Alan Shorter on trumpet.

Recorded at The Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey, CA (September 18, 1966) and track 5 at The Pacific Jazz Festival, Costa Mesa, CA (October 8, 1966 - incorrectly dated October 18 in the liner notes).
The LP version of Don Ellis "Live At Monterey" contained a version of "Concerto For Trumpet" that was actually recorded at the "Pacific Jazz Festival" in Costa Mesa, California the following month. The Monterey version of "Concerto For Trumpet" must not have been up to Don Ellis' standards, and he and producer Richard Bock substituted the Costa Mesa performance in place of the rejected Monterey performance. The 'Monterey version' of "Concerto For Trumpet" will not be issued.
Recorded live-to-2-track at Sear Sound Recording Studio, New York, NY.
