Branford Marsalis, fratello di Wynton, è un musicista di grande valore, Si esibisce in varie formazioni, ma il suo quartetto presenta sicuramente la sua migliore espressione sonora. Jazz moderno, piacevole e ben strutturato, sostenuto, oltre che dal suono del sax di Branford, dal piano di Joey Calderazzo e dalla sezione ritmica formata da Eric Revis e Justin Faulkner. Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul contiene 7 brani lunghi che documentano alla perfezione il suono del quartetto e la voglia di esprimere le proprie idee innovative, pur restando in un ambito di classic jazz. Kurt Elling appare come ospite.

Verve presenta la colonna sonora del documentario biografico diretto da James Erskine, in cui la drammatica esistenza della grande voce del jazz è narrata in stile noir, sulla base di nastri inediti in cui la giornalista Linda Lipnack Kuehl nel 1970 raccolse le testimonianze di tanti personaggi che popolarono la vita tumultuosa di Billie Holiday (compresi gli agenti dell'FBI che la arrestarono...). Ma con la scomparsa repentina della giornalista, i nastri rimasero inascoltati per quasi 50 anni.Il disco contiene incisioni storiche (come il celebre atto di accusa contro il linciaggio "Strange Fruit", prima vera canzone di protesta contro la violenza sulla popolazione neroamericana, purtroppo ancora oggi attuale) e due brani strumentali realizzati appositamente per la colonna sonora
