Nel 1985 Miles Davis aveva creato sensazione, quando aveva lasciato la Columbia Records, dopo 30 anni, per firmare con la Warner Bros. Nell'Ottobre di quello stesso anno, Miles Davis ha cominciato a registrare Rubberband a Los Angeles, negli Ameraycan Studios, con i produttori Randy Hall e Zane Giles. La direzione musicale che aveva intrapreso nel corso di quelle sessions era un radicale cambiamente rispetto al suono dell'epoca. Infatti Rubberband era un disco di soul e funk in cui avrebbero dovuto esibirsi, alle voci, Al Jarreau e Chaka Khan. Ma poi il disco è stato accantonato e Davis ha registrato Tutu, lasciando il materiale di Rubberband negli archivi, per oltre 30 anni. L'album è stato ripreso in mano dai produttori orginali, Hall e Giles, assieme al nipote di Davis Vince Wilburn Jr., che aveva suonato la batteria nel corso delle session originali, avvenute nel 1985-86.
