Carù consigliaVerve presenta la colonna sonora del documentario biografico diretto da James Erskine, in cui la drammatica esistenza della grande voce del jazz è narrata in stile noir, sulla base di nastri inediti in cui la giornalista Linda Lipnack Kuehl nel 1970 raccolse le testimonianze di tanti personaggi che popolarono la vita tumultuosa di Billie Holiday (compresi gli agenti dell'FBI che la arrestarono...). Ma con la scomparsa repentina della giornalista, i nastri rimasero inascoltati per quasi 50 anni.Il disco contiene incisioni storiche (come il celebre atto di accusa contro il linciaggio "Strange Fruit", prima vera canzone di protesta contro la violenza sulla popolazione neroamericana, purtroppo ancora oggi attuale) e due brani strumentali realizzati appositamente per la colonna sonora

Edito nel 1992, questo raro album ci presenta il jazzista Henry Butler, qui convertito al blues, in un esercizio di stuile, per puristi. Un disco voce e piano, puro come l'acqua montana, in cui Butler rilegge brani come Down by The Riverside, That Lucky Old Sun, Jamaica Farewell, Blues After Midnight etc. Disco decisamente raro.

Dopo un capolavoro come Origami Harvest, era lecito attendersi, se non un passo indietro, almeno un disco di transizione. Invece il geniale trombettista di Oakland fa un ulteriore passo avanti. In parte lo si deve alla band che suona nel disco, con Sam Harris, Harish Raghavan e Justin Brown, in parte all'autore che si rifà al suono di Archie Shepp, per ricreare poi musica su composizioni intriganti e personali, innovative e decisamente interessanti. Jazz moderno che ha in Wadada Leo Smith, Muhal Richard Abrahms ed Andrew Cyrille i punti di riferimento.
